After 13 years as an academic researcher in Astrophysics I now work as Technical Commercial Lead for PolyChord Ltd, a spin out from the University of Cambridge Astrophysics group.
I am a creative thinker and am highly adept at problem solving. With 3 years experience of designing and managing innovation projects in a commercial setting, I have learnt how to plan and deliver effective technical work programs in a strictly time-constrained setting. My core technical strengths and technical interests are in statistical inference, machine learning, and simulation-based (aka likelihood-free) inference. |
Throughout my academic career, and in my current role, I have taken great pleasure in supervising and supporting my fellow data-scientists to deliver cutting-edge R&D projects. I am deeply passionate about using deep tech to solve real-world problems, and am driven to ensure that my work delivers positive impact and is ethical.
During an 8-year break from academia to pursue a career in music between my undergraduate degree and career as an astrophysicist, I honed invaluable soft-skills such as excellent communication, organisational, and management skills. Experience outside of tech and academia gives me a different perspective on my work than I would have enjoyed should I have followed a more traditional career path. |

In my spare time I still love writing and playing music (although I find less time to play and perform than I used to), working out, running, and generally getting out into nature. I am learning Spanish, and so enjoy traveling to Spanish-speaking countries. I am passionate about providing the lesbian community with more opportunities to connect since there are almost no lesbian venues remaining, and have been running social events for the lesbian community for the past 7 years. For the curious, you can see exactly how inactive a musician I currently am here - www.catherineallin.co.uk.
